According to experts, national dietary guidelines aimed at reducing the volume of fat in our diets did more harm than good, and a diet rich in the correct fats can be incredibly healthy. It can be difficult to determine the proper fats. However, new study reveals that monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) are one type associated with lower disease and mortality rates.

The makers of algae cooking oil are betting that this new focus on so-called "good fats" will drive health-conscious eaters their way. That's because of their remarkable fat composition.

Algae oil, as the name implies, is an oil extracted from algae. Algae as a sustainable raw material for biofuels is one of the most promising applications. Algae oil can be utilized directly (as raw vegetable oil esterified into biodiesel) or refined into a variety of biofuels, including renewable diesel and jet fuel, as well as other chemical elements for products such as cosmetics.

Algae carbohydrates (sugars) can be fermented to produce additional algae biofuel like ethanol and butanol, as well as other goods including polymers and biochemicals. Algae biomass can be utilized to produce pyrolysis oil or combined heat and power.

Renewable diesels and jet fuels generated from algae are drop-in fuels that substitute petroleum fuels without requiring engine modifications. They meet all of the standards for the petroleum fuel they are intended to replace.

Algae Advantages for Biofuels

Algae are biofuel resources that can be farmed on non-arable land utilizing saltwater or brackish water. One big advantage of using algae for biofuels is that it does not need the use of cropland for food production. According to the Department of Energy, algae have the potential to provide at least 30 times more energy than land-based crops currently used to produce biofuels.

Algae also effectively recycle carbon from the atmosphere. While algae account for less than 2% of the world’s plant carbon, they absorb and fix up to 50% of atmospheric CO2 (30 to 50 billion metric tons per year), converting it to organic carbon. They produce up to 50% of the world's oxygen through photosynthesis.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, algal-based biodiesel produced through fatty acid methyl transesterification (the only type of algae biofuel modeled thus far) can lower greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% when compared to petroleum diesel.

Closed PBRs are adaptable systems that may be programmed to meet the physiological needs of the cultured organism, leading in ideal purity levels and growth rates. PBRs are commonly utilized in the growth of bioactive chemicals for use in biofuels, medicines, and other industrial applications.

Read on to learn more about photobioreactors, including the most common types and uses.

Types of of Photobioreactors

There are currently two most common types of photobioreactors available. These are:

Open Systems

The initial approach of regulated phototrophic species production was to employ a natural open pond (also known as an artificial raceway) pond.

The culture suspension contains all of the necessary nutrients and carbon dioxide, and is irradiated directly by sunlight through its surface.

Raceway ponds are still used in industries because they have cheaper operational expenses than closed PBRs. They do, however, provide insufficient control over the reaction conditions because they rely on environmental light and carbon dioxide, as well as the possibility of contamination by other microbes. Water leakage into the atmosphere is also caused by open technologies.

Closed Systems

Closed PBR construction decreases the risk of water loss from the system, and the possibility of contamination. Although closed systems perform better than open systems, they must be modified to be suitable for the production of low-cost commodities since cell density is still insufficient due to several limitations.

Modern photobioreactors have tried to strike a balance with a very thin film suspension of culture, less use of energy for pumps, optimal lighting, and capital expense, as well as the purity of the microbial population. However, light attenuation and an increase in CO2 needs with growth are two of the most frequent alterations to phototrophic cultures that significantly limit the efficacy of the photobioreactor.

Oxygen accumulation from photosynthetic sources like microalgae growth in photobioreactors is thought to be a critical factor, but it has been demonstrated using dynamic models that levels of dissolved oxygen exceeding 400% air saturation aren't inhibiting when cell density is high enough to block light intensity in the later stages of microalgal culture. Numerous ways have been tested, but only a few approaches could be applied on a broad scale.

Unique Feature of Photobioreactors

A photobioreactor is typically a three-phase system that includes a liquid phase (medium), a solid phase (cells), and a gas phase. Light, which is unique to photoreactors and is frequently referred to as the fourth phase, is the most important characteristic influencing reactor design since it controls microalgal growth and, hence, photosynthetic efficiency (Posten, 2009). As a result, light should be delivered at the right intensity, duration, and wavelength (Carvalho et al., 2011).

Light intensity diminishes exponentially with increasing distance from the reactor wall due to light shading effects caused by an increase in cell and product concentration (increasing turbidity) or the formation of biofilm on the surface of reactor vessels.

Algae Bioreactors

Algae bioreactors are used to grow micro or macro algae. Algae can be grown for biomass production (as in a seaweed cultivator), wastewater treatment, CO2 fixation, or aquarium/pond filtration in the form of an algae scrubber. Algae bioreactors are divided into two types: open reactors and enclosed reactors. Open reactors are exposed to the atmosphere, whereas enclosed reactors, also known as photobioreactors, are isolated from the atmosphere to variable degrees.

Algae bioreactors, in particular, can be used to produce fuels such as biodiesel and bioethanol, animal feed, and to minimize pollutants such as NOx and CO2 in power plant flue gases. This type of bioreactor is fundamentally based on the photosynthetic reaction, which is carried out by chlorophyll-containing algae using dissolved carbon dioxide and sunlight energy. To make the carbon dioxide available to the algae, it is spread throughout the reactor fluid. The bioreactor must be constructed of a transparent material.

Commonly Used Photobioreactors for Algae

At present, there are three basic forms of algal photobioreactors in use, but the determining factor is the unifying feature - the available intensity of sunshine radiation.

Flat Plate PBR

A plate reactor is basically a series of slanted or vertically stacked translucent rectangular boxes, which are frequently separated into two halves to impact reactor fluid agitation. In general, these boxes are linked together to form a system. These connections are also employed in the filling/emptying process, the introduction of gas, and the conveyance of nutritional substances.

The flue gas is mostly introduced near the bottom of the box to give the carbon dioxide adequate time to interact with the algae in the reactor fluid. These plates are often lighted from both sides and light penetration is high. The flat plate design has a limited pressure tolerance and requires a lot of area.

Tubular PBR

A tubular reactor is made up of vertically or horizontally organized tubes that are linked together in a pipe system. This tubing allows the algae-suspended fluid to flow. The tubes are often composed of clear polymers or borosilicate glass, and the constant circulation is maintained by a pump at the system's terminus.

The gas is introduced at the end/beginning of the tube system. This method of delivering gas results in a lack of carbon dioxide and a high concentration of oxygen at the unit's end during circulation, rendering the process inefficient. The microalgae growth on the walls of the tubes can also prevent light from penetrating.

Bubble Column PBR

A bubble column photo reactor is made up of vertically aligned transparent cylindrical columns. The gas is introduced at the bottom of the column, creating a turbulent stream that allows for optimal gas exchange. The bubbling works as a natural agitator as well. Light is normally supplied from outside the column, although newer designs incorporate lights within the column to improve light penetration and distribution.

For nearly a decade, there has been a popular trend of converting diesel engines and have them running SVO.

This oil type is 11 times thicker, won’t burn as quickly, and has a lower impact on the environment. Many older diesel engines actually run better when they are converted to this type of oil. That doesn’t mean there aren’t headaches you need to pay close attention to.

It’s important that you routinely clean the valves and ports to ensure that the carbon buildup doesn’t cause potential damage to the engine.

Piston ring sticking is another area of concern. This is caused by the SVO turning to sludge and becoming thicker than traditional oil. While running Straight Vegetable Oil engines, it is important that you add detergents that are designed to prevent the oil from thickening too much, so the piston ring doesn’t experience any problems.

In addition to this SVO does thicken and gel, so you need to avoid contamination of the vegetable oil. If it thickens too much, the oil no longer lubricates and this can lead to oil starvation in the engine, which will result in damage.

When running SVO based engines, you also need to use a biocide in the mixture. While SVO is a powerful choice for your vehicle, bacteria and fungi grow easily in it. This will lead to blockages and damage if you continue to ignore the problem. Instead, it is a good idea for you to avoid any potential problems by proactively using this biocide in the oil.

Additionally, Straight Vegetable Oil is essential for use in your engine. You need to make sure you aren’t using bottles of cheap vegetable oil off the shelves of your grocery store. The reason is they aren’t the right consistency to operate any engine running SVO and this will lead to potential mechanical problems if you end up attempting it.

The problem is this type of oil can draw in a considerable amount of debris with it. That means your oil filter may clog quickly.

It won’t take long for you to realize just how incredible Straight Vegetable Oil engines are. Take a moment to contact a professional to help you with the conversion process on your favorite vehicle.

When that is done, you can continue to reduce your carbon footprint by routinely using this engine type and that is going to help to give you some peace of mind. Making biodiesel is one such way to promote that.

Biodiesel, as the name implies, is a type of diesel that is produced through inducing a chemical reaction of a natural fat like vegetable oil, or in some cases, animal fats. As an alternative fuel source, biodiesel has garnered significant interest from organizations and environmental activists.

The following method is a simple experiment that will introduce you to the basics of biodiesel production, on a small scale. Even if you don’t complete the experiment, it’s an excellent indicator of just how simple it is to create this clean burning fuel.

If you’re thinking about making biodiesel, you will need to familiarize yourself with the process. You will also need to work in a ventilated area that is well supplied with water, a spill kit, and a fire extinguisher for emergencies.

It’s a good idea to wear light protective clothing, such as a lab jacket, and you will need protective goggles and long butyl rubber gloves that provide protection up to your elbows.

This experiment also requires glass measuring utensils, a scale, a food or laser thermometer, a blender with a glass jar, and a separate glass container for resting the mixture.

Basic Steps for Making Biodiesel at Home

Vegetable oils are best for first time experimentation in making biodiesel. For the best results us canola or sunflower oil. It is possible to recycle oil, but make sure that the cooking oil has been filtered to remove traces of food and other contaminants.

Inside a glass mixer or container, safely pour 200ml of methanol and gently stir, or set the blender to low. Incorporate 3.5g of lye into the mixture. A chemical reaction will occur, creating sodium methoxide.

Allow the mixture to sit for two to five minutes, after which the lye will dissolve. You will know that this step is completed when the mixture turns completely clear, with no visible trace of the lye.

Now it’s time to heat your oil. You will need 1 liter of vegetable oil for this experiment, which should be heated to approximately 55 degrees Celsius. You can use a cooking thermometer or a laser thermometer to check the temperature.

You can now combine the oil and the previous mixture in the glass blender container. Mixing gently for up to 30 minutes, two substances will develop. These will be the biodiesel itself, and glycerin as a side product.

Carefully pour the mixture into a new glass container with a wide rim. The mixture should be allowed to sit until the two products are completely separated. After separation, the biodiesel will rest at the top of the mixture, as it has a lower density than the glycerin. The biodiesel can then be carefully removed and transferred to a glass or HDPE plastic storage container.

Is it Truly This Easy?

As evident from the experiment, making biodiesel is relatively simple, and is safe when proper precautions are followed. Producing biodiesel for off grid living is a real possibility, and wide scale applications are also promising.

Many proponents of biodiesel see it as a logical replacement for fossil fuels in industry and consumer use. However, it is still important to ensure that oil production methods are environmentally friendly and sustainable, so that the numerous environmental benefits of biodiesel are not negated in any way.

If you want more in-depth info you might try this free download.

You Also Might Be Interested in...

You can make ethanol in your backyard and use it to run your vehicles instead of depending on gasoline.

Making Bioethanol

With an additional acre in your backyard, you can grow sufficient amounts of corn to produce sufficient ethanol to power a 17mpg vehicle for 5000 miles, and adequate animal feed for your eggs and chicken. If you grow an acre of sugarcane, you can generate sufficient ethanol for about 15,000 miles.

Corn is also used for making ethanol. A machine grinds the corn kernels and at high temperatures, melts the starch to produce about 2.85 gallons of ethanol for each processed corn bushel.

This process also provides corn fiber, corn oil, gluten and zein, a protein used for manufacturing edible, biodegradable and easily decomposed environmentally friendly plastic containers.

Cellulose or plant fiber found in household waste like paper, cardboard, lawn clippings and sawdust and leftover plant materials like leaves and stalks can be used to make table top ethanol. The cellulose fiber is converted into sugar and then distilled into ethanol.

Insufficient feedstock was the main reason people couldn’t make their bioethanol fuel. However as cellulose grows in everyone’s yards, you can now quickly make fuel using cellulose and thus reduce the amount of waste reaching landfills.

Benefits of table top bioethanol

There are many advantages associated with making bioethanol at home to use as your bio fuel source:

It is a renewable source of fuel which you can make as required by plants. It's thus not a fossil fuel like petrol or diesel, and its manufacture and burning does not increase the world’s greenhouse effect.

It does helps reduce harmful exhaust emissions and is a cheap and high-octane alternative to other harmful fuel additives. It’s easy using ethanol to fuel your cars as it can be used directly in petrol engines without undergoing any modifications.

Petrol’s octane rating increases by three points, when mixed with ethanol, as the fuel is ‘oxygenated’ to burn more thoroughly. This reduces the amount of polluting emissions like carbon monoxide. In fact, when ethanol burns, it releases water and steam with carbon dioxide and negligible amounts of carbon monoxide.

Hydroponic feedstock growing system

In case you don’t have sufficient feed stock to make enough ethanol, an integrated hydroponic feed stock growing system will provide you with sufficient feed stock. So with a self-contained food and energy system, you can now power the system and your home.

You can create energy using plant waste that is essentially compost. Any bioethanol you don 't use can be sold for an additional revenue source while the ethanol you use provides you with a clean energy source.

You Also Might Be Interested in...

The reasons for this are because if something should ever happen; such as a crash in the economy or even an event that kills our electronics, this particular fuel will become paramount if we have no access to fossil fuels.

One such biofuel is the making of algae biofuels. The process isn't easy because you have to extract the oil from the plant and algae isn't a large plant. However, there is a lot of it in one place and grows fairly quickly.

To make a algae biodiesel you need to extract the oil from any plant that you're trying to use. Making algae biofuels at home is possible if you know what you need to do.

You can make biodiesel a lot easier if you buy ready-pressed oil, but let's be honest, if you really need to have this for your fuel source, then the chances of running out and buying it are slim to none if things go south wherever you're located.

What you'll need to do is learn how to make this fuel the long and drawn out way. Why algae? Certain species of algae give over 50% of their biomass in oil. If you think corn and sunflowers are the way to make your oil, you 'll be shocked to learn just how much algae can yield. Per acre, sunflowers make 102 gallons of oil, corn-18, and this awesome little plant can make anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000. Pretty impressive, right?

As stated above, it's not an easy process and it also requires some investment. To make the oil you'll need the equipment and chemicals needed to do so. You're also going to need to spend some time learning how to extract those oils.

There's another upside to farming algae and using it for your fuel. You can grow it in ponds and just about any standing amount of water.

Some algae's yield a higher oil content than others and since there are hundreds of different kinds of algae, you should learn which ones are the best for this venture. That way making algae biodiesel will continue to pay off for you.

If you want more in-depth info you might try this free download.

You Also Might Be Interested in...

If some form of disaster strikes, it may be days, weeks, or even months before you could have access to either of those things. So lots of people learn how to make biofuels.

That's why a lot of people these days are learning to make their own homemade biofuels. If your car or truck is prepared and you're familiar with the formulas and ways of how to make biofuel, then you'll be in much better shape than the rest of the people stuck in a similar situation.

There are a lot of things that you can use to produce biofuels, but some are much better than others. Remember, you need to convert your vehicle to be able to use the biofuel. It is expensive, but it's not so bad if you convert the truck yourself.

Though not the highest yielding crop, soybeans can double for food as well as fuel. This is particularly good for a survival situation. Learning how to make biofuels is fairly useless if you starve to death.

When it comes down to it, if you're in that type of situation, you're going to need food and if your land is taking up space for the plants that you're going to be using for biofuel, if you can't eat the fuel plant, you're taking up precious space for food growth.

Soybeans usually yield around 45 gallons of oil per acre of the crop. Recently, however, there have been some producers of the oil that have attempted a double press of the product in a hope to double the amount of oil extraction.

Algae is another source for creating biofuel. Not only can you grow algae in ponds with nearly no effort at all, but you also don't have to worry about using up land for growing your edible crops. It doesn't require any land area as it can be grown naturally and with minimal prompting.

What's amazing is that this tiny little plant yields more oil than all of the other plants in a one acre plot combined. This doesn't represent all species of algae. Some are more productive than others. Among some of the other plants used are corn, switchgrass, and sunflowers.

If you want more in-depth info you might try this free download.

You Also Might Be Interested in...
