in case of blackouts, looting, etc we live in the country (living off the grid) with water. But just in a make do house. My question is could you not bury an air tight chest freezer under ground and store your can goods dry goods etc.. where they would be safe and not spoil since they would be much cooler underground. I cant get anyone to answer this question. We r thinking of cheaper things we could do, because there is so much to do and little time
You are not the common blog writer, man , great stuff about living off the grid. You surely have something powerful to add to the web. Such a wonderful blog. I’ll come back again for more. Regards:
Moving back to my home place in NC. Will have to build a small house and want to live off the grid…enough trees to build and supply wood for burning…plus it’s very windy there and sunny and a stream that never stops…how would I go about deciding which one or all to suit my needs?
Thanks!
Hi,
We have several articles on living off the grid and how to pick just the right property, you can also sign up above to get our free living off the grid guide book, it includes a very large section on choosing the right place to live off the grid
I live off the grid , in South Louisiana we have a high water table, the best “root celler/storage/hide hole is simple find an ole refrigerator remove the motor and coils ,dig a hole in the yard deep enough to hold the frig when laying on its back line the hole with straw (about a foot) lay frig in hole line the sides of hole with more straw and put a layer of straw inside the frig. now you have a root cellar after you have filled the frig close lid layer with straw then dirt. You can use this method to store can goods, fresh root veggies, or other valuables just one thing make sure the rubber gasket is in good shape. we have worked out many ways to live off the grid here.
Hi Jeanette, thanks for the great advice on what you do to live off the grid. We always think of a root cellar as a way to keep produce cold, but had not considered if you are living off grid in a warm climate like Louisiana, that maybe water might be the problem, and the solution. Ground water is fairly stable temperature, and a great solution here. Thanks for the great advice helping people live off the grid.
We’re a group of volunteers who are starting living off the grid a brand new scheme in our community. Your website provided us with useful info to work on.
